Your Vegan And Vegetarian Guide For A Mexican Vacation-Riviera Maya

This is my second post about food and I don´t write as much about food as I would love to because I´m more focused on eating than writting a review but here it is.
I recently became Vegan for many reasons including animals and health. And I know many travelers who visit Riviera Maya are probably wondering if Mexicans even have Vegan or Vegetarian options. We do love with passion all the greasy food just like you do, but guess what, you can still eat like a God and choose vegan choices in Riviera Maya.

This is my top list of places and a brief description of what they have. Their order is from the closest place to Cancun airport untill the end of the world (A.K.A. Sian Kaan):

Puerto Vegan, Siempre Sano In Puerto Morelos

This place used to have a different name and owner and even though is not as good as it used to be, it is still a great option. Their options are the closest you will get to the actual Mexican cuisine but in a Vegan level. It is very cheap to eat good and jummy here, plus the ladies are very nice and ingredients natural and local.

La Senda In Playa del Carmen

Their Tofu a la Mexicana in tacos are supreme. It is nos as cheap as other options but you can be sure their options are very healthy and they are more focused on raw vegan food. Their smoothies are to die for specially the pineapple and spirulina. Good ambiance but it is usually crowded during the afternoons. *Thursdays is Pozole day so I highly recommend you not to miss it.

Bio Organicos in Playa del Carmen

This is another option with good rates and tasty options. You can find from really organic and raw stuff to fast food options like burgers or authentic options like "panuchos". Good service and it is also located just a few steps from 5th Avenue so you cannot miss it.

Marvin´s Burgers in Playa del Carmen

I absolutely adore these burgers, and I used to hate burgers. Even as a meat lover I was always disgusted by the amount of meat in buegers but this place has changed my mind completely. They have one called "chickita" ufff it is really good. The fries are natural not packaged and they use sea salt. They also have "buho cola" which is a natural soda that could make Coca Cola jealous. Sweetened with Agave honey and imported from another state in Mexico.


Turtle Bay Cafe in Akumal

It is not really a vegan place but they have Vegan homemade ice cream and it is a MUST. they can also offer salads and stuff that are meatless. But I meanly listed this place because their vegan ice cream is simply delicious and it is always good that regular business think of an option for "our kind".


Co.Con Amor in Tulum

I travel often to Tulum but for some reason I never tried this place before until a few days ago. Their options are good even though they don´t use salt or barely use it. The rates are impressively good to be a place in Tulum (where almost everything is expensive as hell). The service is probably what I did not like, you practically have to force the girls to smile at you and forget about greeting you or make conversation with you. conversation seems like another thing you have to request from the menu. However, I always say it, don´t care if they are not as "friendly" to me as long as their are kind to the animals and they do rescue dogs. They are pet friendly and have 3 cute dogs (that are also not as friendly) but at least they wave their tales and will get close to you if you stay long enough.

Restaurare in Tulum

This is a high end restaurant, so if you need a place to go with your spouse this would be probably your best option. Yes, rates are no cheap but the service is out of this world and their options.. Oh My God! soo good and healthy. Organic ingredients, almost raw and super tasty. It is located on Tulum beach road.


Charlys Vegan Tacos near Sian Kaan

Last but no least, my favorite place for tacos. I mean who does not love tacos?? They have all kinds of delicious tacos: chicharrón en salsa verde, chorizo, pastor, etc. sauces are so good and the fried banana dessert with syrup is heavenly. It is not cheap and it is not in Tulum town but if you are renting a car or a bike and want to really eat good, please visit them. You have to take the Tulum beach road south and almost close to Sian Kaan you will find them. Totally worth the trip.

Now you know what I know, so you can eat what I have eaten. Hopefully this list will make it easier to navigate the crazy and wild roads of Riviera Maya in a Vegan way. ALGUIEN

Todo empieza casi siempre del mismo modo; un anuncio, una llamada o un mensaje, en este caso fue un anuncio en un grupo de Facebook: "hay un perro que dejaron olvidado sin comida ni agua, encerrado en el patio de una casa". Era por el mes de Diciembre y aunque aquí rara vez hace frío, ese año el clima decidió cobrarnos todos los calores que nos había regalado anteriormente. Semanas interminables de lluvia y frío, para colmo y como era de esperarse todo mundo comentaba "pobrecito", "que alguien lo ayude", "ya lo reportaron?", pero NADIE se atrevía a hacer algo. Envié mensaje privado al creador del post pidiendo la dirección exacta y descripción del perro, tenía ya un mes de estar abandonado a su suerte en el patio trasero de una casa, el chico le aventaba restos de comida desde su azotea cuando podía pero no había modo de aventarle agua para que tomara ni resguardarlo del sol durante el día, de la lluvia ni del frío por las noches. Cuando recibo o veo este tipo de denuncias por lo regular espero algún tiempo considerable, siempre esperando que el dueño regrese o que algún vecino que se haya quedado a cargo del perro, llegue. Pasaron dos semanas mas y volví a preguntar porque el clima era terriblemente insoportable y las lluvias no paraban, el perro seguía sin comida ni agua y no había llegado nadie.

"Desde mi azotea se ve cachorro, mas o menos de unos 8 meses" me dijo quien lo reportó, llamé a una amiga que tenía automóvil para que me ayudara con el rescate, llegamos en la noche, porque por alguna razón en este mundo las cosas malas se hacen a los ojos de todos pero si son buenas, deben ocultarse.
Estacionamos el carro frente a la casa, me puse frente a la puerta principal y llamé al dueño pero nadie contestó, desde que llegué sentí un olor nauseabundo, como a animal muerto, acostumbrada a ver de todo en este tipo de "ambientes" me esperé lo peor...

Había un pasillo estrecho y totalmente oscuro al lado de la casa, entre más caminaba mas percibía el olor. Me topé con un portón y a pesar de que estaba oscuro alcancé a distinguir que algo se movía, entonces lo vi: El pobre animal estaba en un mar de platos desechables, bolsas de plástico y feces, su pelaje estaba cubierto de plastas secas de excremento y lodo, olía terriblemente mal pero su boca olía aún peor, no se trataba de un cachorro sino de un perro adulto, estaba flaco y sucio pero considerando que las lluvias le habían lavado el pelaje, hubiera podido estar en peores condiciones.

Se notaba cansado y enfermo pero sus ojos brillaron cuando me vieron, pensé que me ladraría pero estaba tan feliz de ver a alguien, de ver a un humano.
Abrí el portón que por suerte estaba sin candado, le puse una correa y corrí con él hacia el carro, camino a casa rogaba que no estuviera enfermo, que mi rescate no tuviera represalias y que Dios me ayudara para encontrarle un hogar pronto, llegando a casa lo revisé y aunque tenía mal aspecto no parecía enfermo, cosa que después me confirmó la Veterinaria.

Fueron pocas semanas que estuvo conmigo, las primeras no comía muy bien y se notaba deprimido, a pesar de que se veía agradecido por recibir comida y atenciones yo sé que de momento nada podía reemplazar el recuerdo que él tenía de su "familia", cómo le explicas a un ser tan noble y tan puro como un perro que la que él consideraba su familia decidió abandonarlo?, cómo le haces entender que se ocuparon en cosas mas divertidas o mas importantes que él, que su paga por haber alegrado sus días, ser guardián de sus hogares y haber cuidado de sus hijos, había sido el abandono?

Afortunadamente no pasó mucho tiempo y encontramos un hogar en el que pudiera pasar el resto de sus días como todo perro debe pasárselos: siendo amado como un miembro mas de la familia.

Dudo mucho que recuerde lo que fue su vida anterior y si lo hace espero que solo recuerde los buenos momentos si es que los hubo alguna vez. Ahora su nombre es Beni, tiene dos hermanos perro y dos hermanos gato y una familia humana que lo ama.

En cuanto a la noche del rescate, esa noche no pasó gran cosa; un perro mas, un perro menos, algo insignificante que no hizo a la tierra detenerse, pero que cambió la vida de alguien, porque no importa si la vida es de humano o de animal mientras la vida sea de ALGUIEN, ésta debería ser importante.
